Rome, Open City is a shockingly authentic experience conceived and directed amid the ruin of World War II, with immediacy in every frame. Marking a watershed moment in Italian cinema, this galvanic work garnered awards around the globe and left the beginnings of a new film movement in its wake. Rome, Open City won the Grand Prize of the Festival at the 1946 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Writing, Screenplay in 1947. GLOBAL CINEMA SPECIAL EVENT After witnessing the St. Valentine's Day massacre, musicians Joe and Jerry (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon) find an unlikely hiding place disguised as Josephine and Daphne in an all-female band. But when Joe/Josephine becomes enamored of the band's lead singer Sugar (Marilyn Monroe), Jerry/Daphne is wooed by millionaire Osgood Fielding III (Joe E. Brown) and the mob shows up at the hotel where they are working, comedy ensues. Although legend has it there were audience walkouts in its first sneak preview, Wilder ignored the advice from studio personnel and stood by the film. His instincts proved correct as Some Like It Hot went on to garner six Academy Award nominations including a Best Director nod for Wilder as well as a DGA Award nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Motion Pictures. In 1989, Some Like It Hot was added to the National Film Registry by the United States Library of Congress. Starring: Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Marilyn Monroe, George Raft, Pat O'Brien and Joe E.
