Dark Avenue, including the lobby of 667 Dark Ave. with spiral staircase, the Vile Village village square, Heimlich Hospital with parking lot and lobby, the entire Caligari Carnival with roller coaster, the mountaintop campground on Mount Fraught, a tropical island, and probably the most challenging, the Hotel Denoument's two-story open atrium lobby, complete with working elevator and full exterior driveway and pond. These are sets that at the very best had four to five weeks to install and dress, and this is only the large exteriors, which made up only a fraction of the overall volume of scenery being built. Thankfully, the crew was not only incredibly talented but also incredibly dedicated. The Art Department loved the material and loved working with Bo Welch. The design process was fantastic, always starting with some great sketches from Bo, followed by incredible illustrations from the four illustrators, and then into working drawings. I was fortunate to have an extremely talented team of Set Designers, Graphic Artists and Art Directors, and equally talented crews throughout. The construction department, headed by Ross Walshe, was stretched beyond belief but managed to pull off amazing scenery, along with super-talented painters and sculptors (led by John Wilcox and Aaron Jordan). The show had an stellar set decorating team and props team, headed by Kate Marshal and Dean Goodine, and altogether, I would say without exception, everyone on the creative side would agree that despite being an incredible challenge, this was a hugely satisfying show and a career highlight for many. It is extremely satisfying having successfully completed a show as difficult as A Series of Unfortunate Events, to be able to look at set photos side by side with the original illustrations and see just how much they look alike. Given the scope, style and time frame of these builds, I think it speaks volumes to the dedication and the top to bottom talent that came together to make it the amazing show it is. ADG A.
