The Film Society and the American Cinematheque opened its 2019 screening series with Mary Poppins (1964) on April 28 at the Egyptian Theater. The preshow featured a wide variety of images on the design and production of the film, a few of which are shown on these pages. The film presented was a DCP of the fortieth anniversary digital restoration of a European release print which had a 1:66 formatting. This formatting allowed for the maximum image to be seen of the cinematographer's original capture of the film. Both the image and audio remastering were sensational, and the film's panel and the audience were thrilled by the quality of the presentation. Following the film, a discussion was moderated by Thomas A. Walsh and Jeff Kurtti with Tony Walton (costume and design consultant), Harrison Ellenshaw (son of Peter Ellenshaw, special effects) and Theodore Thomas (son of Frank Thomas, animator). The history and affection shared by these two generations of filmmakers who were touched by this production was apparent in the many stories they shared. A B
