RESULTS Death in the South Pacifi c NO, IT’S NOT A TIKI TRAGEDY—IT’S THE OFFICIAL COCKTAIL OF TALES 2010 “D eath in the South Pacifi c,” created by Washington State bartender Evan Martin, has been chosen the offi cial cocktail of Tales of the Cocktail 2010. Recipes poured in from New Zealand to Washington as more than 150 bartenders worldwide punched it up to create a tiki-inspired cocktail for the 8th annual festival. Martin won fi rst place with his drink featuring three rums—Appleton Estate Extra 12 Year Old, Rhum Clément VSOP and Cruzan Blackstrap—as well as Grand Marnier, absinthe, Trader Tiki’s orgeat syrup and Fee’s falernum and grenadine. “This drink hits all the contest require- ments on the nose,” says Jeff Berry, offi cial cocktail competition judge and tiki expert. “It creatively mixes multiple rums, sweeteners and citrus to ‘tikify’ the Planter’s Punch template; it has a full- bodied, layered but not over-complicated fl avor; and its garnish shows theatrical fl air, cleverly referencing the drink name.” Martin’s cocktail will be served through- out Tales of the Cocktail, July 21–25. The second place cocktail is the “Once Upon a Time,” created by James Goggin. Peter Bogren, a local Palace Café bartender, wins third place with his cocktail “Peter’s Planter’s Punch.” For more information, go to www. TalesoftheCocktail.com.
