62 The Costume Designer Spring 2018 IN FOCUS BOLDFACE NAMES BFN - EVENTS BFN - WORK Heading back into Season 2 of The Orville, starring Seth MacFarlane for FOX, CD Joseph Porro has paired up with CDG Secretary Ivy Thaide as the ACD and ILL Gloria Kim. From creator/star Seth MacFarlane, The Orville is a television series based 400 years in the future and shoots in the heart of Los Angeles at the 20th Century Fox lot. Otis Institute of Art and Design invited CD Renée Ehrlich Kalfus to speak to fashion and costume design students in Los Angeles this past March. The students are involved in a comprehensive program that encompasses learning to sketch, design, and build, as well as dying and printing their own fabrics. The impressively rigorous program yields professional-looking results. Kalfus remarked that many questions were industry-directed, including the always burning one: How to get into the business? CD Debra McGuire just completed Disney's pilot Generation Gap with creator Mark Reisman with whom she is 4-4, pilot to series. Directed by David Kendall, it's the story of a single dad raising a precocious tween daughter and reenacting his 1990s teen-self. The pilot flashes back-and-forth from current day to the '90s. Starring Ian Reed Kesler, Ruth Righi, and Caroline Rhea, Generation Gap is a laugh-out-loud comedy with a refreshingly "old school" sitcom vibe. CD Marissa Borsetto recently designed I Mom So Hard. Stars Kristin Hensley and Jennifer Smedley were a YouTube sensation before CBS gave them their own show writing about their experiences as two best friends dealing with marriage and motherhood. Also starring Freddie Prinze Jr. and David Flynn, it is produced by co-writer Michelle Nader and Rob Thomas. CD Joseph Porro teams up with ACD Ivy Thaide Career Achievement honoree Joanna Johnston and VP Cate Adair Following the 20th Annual CDGA, Career Achievement winner Joanna Johnston was interviewed by Vice President Cate Adair in an intimate Q&A at the Costume Designers Guild office. Johnston regaled a captivated audience with stories from her childhood and personal experiences in the industry. A special thanks to our Head of Education Ivy Thaide for organizing and to the sponsors: Western Costume, Milt & Edie's Drycleaners & Tailoring Center, Designer Fabric Warehouse, DLM Off-Price Specialists, and Hollywood Distillery for a memorable evening. CD Sophie de Rakoff and her husband Kevin Bray, the original director on Suits (which Meghan Markle starred in), made our membership collectively gasp when they were seen attending the Royal Wedding. De Rakoff decided upon a Grace Kelly/Wallis Simpson inspired suit. She says, "The fabric came from my friends at International Silks and Woolens (of course) and High Society tailors whipped the suit up for me from a bad sketch and a couple of pieces in my wardrobe. But long after the other memories have faded, I know I will forever remember the sunshine, the pealing of the bells, and that magical walk to St. George's Chapel. It really was an extraordinary CD Ane Crabtree is excited to be designing the political thriller The Last Thing He Wanted, collaborating with Mudbound director Dee Rees and actor Anne Hathaway, two brilliant minds whom she immensely respects. In this adaptation of the novel by Joan Didion, Hathaway plays the lead role of hardscrabble journalist Elena McMahon, who becomes entangled in the arms race around the Iran-Contra affair. Crabtree teams once again with favored crew from Westworld Season 1, including ACD Juan Lopez as costume supervisor. Filmed on location, CD Kathleen Felix-Hager just wrapped ABC's For Love, a pilot that is actually a love letter to the city of New Orleans. Starring Ethan Peck (the grandson of the legendary Gregory Peck) and Lex Scott Davis, the project reunited Felix-Hager with fellow Dexter alumni, director John Dahl and director of photography Jeffrey Jur.
