Spring 2018 The Costume Designer 17 LABOR REPORT UNION LABEL CDG Labor Report June 2018 May 10 UCLA Labor Studies Graduating Class Celebration. CDG Labor Delegate Dana Woods and I, along with several other IATSE labor delegates and some 500 or more union labor delegate affiliates to the County Federation of Labor, celebrated this year's class of graduating labor leaders at a fundraising dinner to purchase the UCLA Labor Studies Center. The Center is where many of us have studied and organized around the issues of working people in Los Angeles County and across the state of California, organizing hotel workers, car wash workers, port drivers, the fight for $15 wage campaign, and so very much more. The future of organized labor is as bright as the sparkle in the eyes of the graduating students who spoke about what brought them to labor organizing and what the future looks like to them. The U.S. Supreme Court case Janus vs AFSCME looms over us, but we will grow stronger facing the challenges the verdict of this case and any other future cases attacking organized labor's ability to bring collective bargaining rights to workers asking for representation. It is that which threatens us that will make us stronger by looking at what we are and what we hope to become as a part of our labor working family. California became the fifth largest economy not by luck, but rather through worker productivity. May 12 National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Food Drive. The U.S. Postal Service yearly food drive collected millions of pounds of canned and dry food. Now we are needed to volunteer to help sort the food we placed at our mailbox that was picked up by our letter carrier union sisters and brothers all over America. We CDG members can volunteer, along with our IATSE sisters and brothers and ask our friends and family members to join us for a few hours on June 19, the IATSE day of volunteering to help sort the food collected to prepare it for distribution. The date and location will be posted in the CDG weekly GEMS. June 5 Primary Election Day. Mark your calendar June 5, 2018. To Do: VOTE. We the people are the government and it is our duty to participate in our democracy or we will lose our democracy. Every vote counts. June 8-10 District 2 Convention Las Vegas, Nevada. The convention brings together the IATSE membership Delegates from the states of Hawaii, Nevada, Arizona, and California that make up District 2. The Delegates from CDG Local 892 will report on their experience sharing the issues before us in organized labor and in particular, the accomplishments of the IATSE District II in organizing contract negotiations, job safety, workers' rights protection, healthcare and pension security, incentives and protections of intellectual properties and training of the newest Delegates to participate in the strongest form of democracy, organized labor. In solidarity, Betty Madden, bmadden@cdgia.com
