12 The Costume Designer Spring 2018 On the cover of is Lou Eyrich, the quintessential Costume Designer. Her career shows the versatility it takes to succeed in today's diverse world of Costume Design. She is not only an award-winning designer, but also a great mentor supporting her assistant Costume Designers as they move up the field, and she is breaking new ground as she moves forward as a producer with her longtime collaborator Ryan Murphy. We just celebrated our 20th CDG Awards, and it was a beautiful evening celebrating the art of Costume Design. The speeches from our Career Achievement honoree Johanna Johnston, Distinguished Collaborator Guillermo del Toro, and Spotlight winner Kerry Washington were so inspirational and showed their love of Costume Design. Our awards evening grows bigger and better every year. We are already in the planning stages for next year's awards gala. I had the pleasure of seeing an exhibit of the costumes from the film Titanic at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. I ran the costume workroom in Mexico for Deborah Lynn Scott, and it was so wonderful to see the costumes she designed still bringing so much joy to the fans over 20 years later. It's a testament to the iconic art Costume Designers create. The curator of the exhibit, Leslie Klinger, did a beautiful job showcasing the costumes in the mansion to show off the beauty of the garments, and I want to thank her for taking such good care of my friends and me as she gave us a VIP tour of the estate and grounds. Hopefully, we will see more costume exhibits at the estate as it's a beautiful way to show film and TV costumes. I was so impressed when I heard about Sophie de Rakoff's book The Women of Woodcock, celebrating Mark Bridges' Costume Design from the Phantom Thread. It is a wonderful example of the camaraderie amongst Costume Designers that she would highlight the work of her colleague. We should always be celebrating and supporting each other because it makes us stronger as a union. Emmy season is upon us. There is so much wonderful work being done in television, and with the TV Academy adjusting the categories to Contemporary, Period and Fantasy/ Sci-Fi, now those different elements of Costume Design are celebrated. I've been in Atlanta most of the year Costume Designing Goosebumps 2—a Halloween movie. It's so good to be back home amongst my friends. I wish you all a fabulous summer and hope to see you at the 705/892 Mixer at the CDG office on June 16. In solidarity, Salvador Perez sperez@cdgia.com PRESIDENT'S LETTER UNION LABEL President Salvador Perez and Shari Headly in front of Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, where they visited the Titanic exhibit.
