Spring 2018 The Costume Designer 15 Dear Members, I often speak with prospective members and students about the benefits of joining the union. Your union negotiates with those that employ you to ensure the best possible terms and conditions while on the job. We also ensure a safe work environment. Being a part of this union provides a built-in buffer for members when having to deal with disputes with employers. These can be as simple as payroll questions to serious labor disputes. The union is here to represent you when any area of the contract is violated. Being part of this union enables you to earn insurance coverage paid entirely by the employer, along with retirement benefits. I am proud to be a part of this organization particularly at a time when we find unions being threatened head on with legislation to bring states into a right-to-work status. If we lived in a society free of greed and competition, perhaps employers could be trusted to provide the benefits your union ensures but time has proven that this is not the case. Unions have fought hard over the years to establish rights workers take for granted today. Child labor laws, the five-day workweek, overtime, vacation pay, safe work environments, and health coverage are some of the issues now standard thanks to union members of the past who fought for these rights. The fight is not over, and you can help by making sure that electors sensitive to workers' rights are elected. We can all help this cause be contributing to the IATSE PAC. We have forms in the office you can fill out or you can contribute online at iatse.net. Please sign up today for a monthly or one-time contribution. We are all responsible for our future and the future of those in the next generation.
