WHAT DO PROVENCAL ROSÉ, studies in environmental policy, skiing down the snow-topped mountains of Colorado, and a bright-pink Cadillac all have in common? Two words: Charles Bieler. Born in England, raised across Europe, Montreal, and Vermont, and finally settled—if one could even call it that—in New York City, the constantly- on-the-move Bieler is a serious force to be reckoned with. In fact, it's harder to find a facet of the industry Bieler hasn't influenced with his grape-stained touch. The SOMM Journal sat down with the successful winemaker/entrepreneur for lunch at New York's Charlie Bird in early March, where we barely scratched the surface of his successful projects while briefly touching on what he has coming down the pipeline. Born to a Swiss father and American mother, Bieler's transatlantic upbringing foreshadowed his worldly success.
