www.postmagazine.com 4 POST DECEMBER 2017 BITS & PIECES NEW YORK CITY — Founded in 1979 by Lorne Michaels, Broadway Video (www.broadwayvideo.com) is a global media and entertainment company now in its fourth decade of completing television, film, music, digital and commercial projects, in- cluding Saturday Night Live for NBC. With offices in New York and Los Angeles, Broadway Video produces and distributes original content for every platform and offers one-stop tools and talent for editorial, design, audio, color grading, finishing and screening, as well as digital file stor- age and distribution. Recently, Post dropped by Broadway Video's New York City office to catch up with the team, which had quite a bit to discuss. We visited with the studio's Emmy Award-winning Sue Pelino, VP of audio post production, who was recently honored for Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Variety Series Or Special for her work on the 2017 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony. We also found out more about how the studio has expanded significantly into the digital/stream- ing space — something Broadway Video had announced earlier this year — and how it has widened its focus on the business functions of streaming TV, focusing on produc- tion, distribution, branding, creative and monetization — all of which tie into the most significant emerging trends in the broadcast industry. The studio reports that in 2017, 1.7 million US adults were expected to move away from cable/satellite and opt for on-demand OTT services instead. As audiences continue to move in favor of OTT, Broadway Video sees itself as well-positioned for a significant opportunity in the new landscape. As a New York content creator mainstay, Broadway Video has offices on both coasts to further develop its full slate of services that include: Traditional post production (editorial, audio, design, color grading, finishing and screening), digital content workflow platforms, advanced encoding and transcoding solutions, metada- ta management, cloud-based file storage and creative content-based branding campaigns. "You know Broadway Video as the premier partner for traditional produc- tion services that it provides for pro- gramming such as Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Portlandia, Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, 30 Rock, Late Night With Seth Meyers and Detroiters," says Stacey Foster, president and manag- ing director. "Now, Broadway Video is being recognized as an innovator of creativity that leverages legacy services with the new technologies for digital video production, content creation, distribution, delivery services and marketing tech strategies." One of the services Broadway Video provides includes addressing the video streaming needs for Roku. Above Average, one of Broadway Video's digital studios, is hosting and distributing content for the entire Roku Audience Network, which allows content creators to quickly submit programming. Broadway Video divisions that contribute to these and other projects include production services, branding + creative and digital delivery. "To ensure that all its clients' needs are met, Broadway Video expand- ed its services with the addition of the production group this past spring," says Andy Garland, VP, production at Broadway Video. "The production group allows Broadway Video to deliver all the ad- vantages of an in-house commercial production group to its clients. The group offers its expertise in idea gen- eration, shoot direction and produc- tion, writing and project management, in addition to working closely with the post department on editing." The studio also added a brand- ing + creative group to its services. "Broadway Video clearly saw a need to evolve to stay relevant within the new media landscape and also needed a competitive differentia- tor, which it recognized in its own creative reputation," says Elaine Cantwell, chief creative officer, Branding + Creative. "By adding the Branding + Creative group to Broadway Video's services, we're able to focus on our breadth of talent in order to function as an architect of well-crafted viewing experiences that elevate brands." During our visit, Post also had a chance to check out a demo of the studio's Digital 1 content solution, which was announced earlier this year at the 2017 NAB Show in Las Vegas, and see how the studio has made progress with it since its launch. The Digital 1 workflow solution is a single, seamless platform for man- aging and delivering digital content to OTT marketplaces. During our visit, the team discussed how, as an innovator of new technologies for digital video production, distribution, delivery services and post production, it developed Digital 1 to meet the de- mands of a new economy, addressing all aspects of digital content fulfill- ment — from creative conception to monetization. Broadway Video's Digital 1 service is a single portal that facilitates preparation, aggregation and delivery of digital content across multi- ple platforms in a single, seamless process. This workflow consists of advanced encoding and transcod- ing solutions, rich metadata man- agement, cloud-based file storage, format conversion, quality control and closed captioning capabilities. Large networks to independent content cre- ators can deliver content to Broadway Video's multiple qualified platforms, which include Amazon, Google Play, Hulu, iTunes, Netflix, Roku (mentioned earlier) and Vudu, among others. Broadway Video's Digital 1 service is offered on a single-fee, per-title basis. — By Linda Romanello HOUSE CALL: INSIDE NEW YORK'S BROADWAY VIDEO Broadway Video has offices in New York and Los Angeles.
