www.postmagazine.com 3 POST DECEMBER 2017 EDITOR'S NOTE ost's December issue has a long tradition of recapping the past year and providing an "Outlook" for the months ahead. Our projections for 2018 will continue into the January issue, as well as online, where we'll feature exclusive coverage not found in our print pages. You'll find plenty of additional exclusives online too, so let me take a moment to point out some highlights. Linda Romanello interviewed Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri writer/director Martin McDonagh, as well as the film's editor Jon Gregory. Three Billboards is generating quite a buzz and could see multiple Oscar nominations. Justice League was closing in on $200M as Post went to press. Motion capture provider Animatrik shares details online regarding its work on the superhero blockbuster. The studio built a stage on the Universal lot last November and coordinated a six-day shoot, providing the mocap and virtual cinematography needed to create the super villain Steppenwolf, portrayed by Ciaran Hinds. "With mocap there's no real interactions, or waiting for lighting, or anything like that," explains Brett Ineson, president/CTO of Animatrik. "That left the director free to focus on devel- oping the character, without having to triple-check environment and props and support staff." FuseFX is collaborating with Amazon Video to provide VFX for The Tick. The studio is the sole visual effects provider on the series, handling anywhere up to 160 shots per episode. Work is spread out between FuseFX's three offices and includes going on-set for green-screen shoots. "It's very collaborative," says show creator/EP Ben Edlund. "We feel like we're making a movie, the work is so cinematic." "We have even developed new processes as a result of this show in order to be even faster and to provide even more advanced realism," adds VFX supervisor Chad Wanstreet, "all while pushing creativity as far as we can." And lead VFX artist Jeremy Wanek took time out to discuss Black Space VFX's work on the horror thriller, Dementia 13. As the lone VFX vendor, the studio was tasked with completing approximately 60 shots for the feature, in which a masked killer terrorizes members of a family at a secluded estate. There's too much to mention in this space, so head over to postmagazine.com for more news from throughout the post industry. Happy holidays! Here's to a great 2018! any of us enter into the holiday season in a sort of state of reflection. We look back at the year and at what we've accomplished, and look to the year ahead, hoping to reach even more of our goals. This holds true for the post community as well. Throughout the year, Post editors talk to industry professionals about some of their greatest challenges, ask them to identify areas of the market where they are seeing the most growth, discuss some of their greatest accomplishments and report on some of the technologies that are hot right now and the trends they see emerging. No one has shied away from talking about the continuing evolution of 4K, HDR, 3D, remote collaboration, VR/AR, streaming/on-demand projects and ambisonic sound. It's for this reason that Post dedicates its December, and now January, issues to these topics that are most prevalent within the post community. Every year, our Outlook issues cover the key trends and technologies that are making serious inroads in the community, sharing the voices of those who are leading the way. Iain Blair gets the ball rolling on page 24 with his SWOT feature — where he speaks with some of the industry's top directors who address the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats facing our industry. On page 28, Post's Jennifer Walden shares some insight from audio profes- sionals. We finish off the section with a mix of articles from post community leaders, who contrib- ute their thoughts on where we are now and where we're going in 2018. Other contributions from AJA, Autodesk, Bandit, Killer Tracks, Renegade Animation and Little Big Bang cover a range of topics that include HDR, new media, editing, production music, animation and more. This year, we received an overwhelming response from the industry — and received more Outlook contributions than ever before. That's why we are extending our Outlook coverage to the January 2018 issue, as well as to our Website: postmagazine.com. Before I head off to sip some eggnog, I want to wish all of you a happy and healthy holiday season.
