36 SAG-AFTRA | Fall/Winter 2017 | SAGAFTRA.org Scene Around SAG-AFTRA Dazzles at Dynamic and Diverse SAG-AFTRA and the Television Academy held the 5th Annual Dynamic and Diverse Emmy Celebration at the TV Academy's Saban Media Center in North Hollywood on Sept. 12. The yearly event honors diversity in television, in front of and behind the camera. SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris and National Board member Jon Huertas (This Is Us) discussed the evolution of onscreen diversity from stereotypes to the depiction of the complexities of diverse ages, cultures, ethnicities and genders. Huertas explained, "When I first got [to Los Angeles], I had to play a lot of gang-bangers because that's all that was being written for Latinos." He said it's an indication that the industry is changing that he's now able to play a successful businessman. Also in attendance was SAG-AFTRA Secretary-Treasurer and Los Angeles Local President Jane Austin, as well as members from the National and Los Angeles Local boards.
