The Wild World of Web Series Dominos UK Web telenova promotes Mexicano range LONDON — Production company Hoot Comedy (www.hootcomedy.com) launched an animated Web series spoofing Mexican soap operas for Domi- nos UK, called Los Pasiones de la Familia Verduras, which will play across social, outreach and paid content distribution. The telenovela was animated by BAFTA-winning animation director Jim Le Fevre (www.jimlefevre.com), and features a host of soap-like characters based on ingredients from the Mexicano range of Dominos pizzas. Le Fevre, who, with his team, designed and built the sets, shot the veg- etables live action, and then in post used compositing and 2D animation via Adobe After Effects. This three-part Web show (www.facebook.com/DominosPizza) com- bines drama and comedy and features the Verduras vegetable family in Mexico. Head of the family Don Cebollo, "one tough onion," agrees to let his son Chilli (a chilli) marry Consuela Tomate (a tomato) from a rival fam- ily, but all is not well in the household when an unexpected guest arrives. Each episode ends in an epic cliff hanger with multiple choices for fans to say what they think will happen in the next installment. The series finale will give budding video-makers the chance to film their own ending for Los Passiones de la Familia Verduras and get a chance at winning a Nokia Lumia 800 smartphone. Dominos is producing a handy print out sheet, which will be available for download to create the key characters and props. Le Fevre called on the voices of Barunka O'Shaughnessy (Coming of Age, Comedy Lab, That Mitchell, Webb Look) and Justin Edwards (Pramface, Skins, Rob Brydon Show) for the series' characters. and in post I'll add solar flares and light effects in order to bring the production qual- ity up to broadcast standards." 20 Dollar is truly a team effort. In addi- tion to funding the episodes themselves, the Ashburns cast and crew the show, write the show, shoot the show (Matthew shot the last two episodes), post the show and put it online. "It's Athena and I through the entire process, and we lean on each other for our individual skill sets. We com- pletely immerse ourselves and learn some- thing new every time." They do call on others for music, which is entirely original, reports Ashburn. "Athe- na did the theme music, and I did music on the last two episodes — the first two were done by a great composer, but he wasn't available, so I picked it up and just did it." They use Avid Pro Tools for their audio needs, edit on Final Cut 7, and use After Effects for graphics as well as "to bring up the quality, if the imagery is not what we want." The Red Giant plug-in Knoll Light Factory is used for lens flares. "A lot of it is just layer upon layer to get the effect and the color I am looking for in After Effects," he says.
