www.postmagazine.com 2 POST DECEMBER 2016 nce again, Post is providing insight to the year ahead with our December 'Outlook' issue. Coverage begins on page 12 with a number of high-profile directors going on the record, and continues with pros from throughout the industry giving their opinions on where the post business is heading, be it in terms of sound, design, new media, editing or VFX. This coverage extends to postmagazine.com, where many additional pros weigh in. Michael Mason, a sound designer/engineer at Stir Post Audio in Chicago says he's "seeing more spots produced strictly for YouTube and social media. Not being tied to the standard lengths gives agency creatives more freedom to tell a story and draw people in. I'm able to let the mix build, ebb and flow more. It's not all in your face and out in :30. It also gives me more of a chance to stretch out sonically and create more dynamics, which I really like." His Stir colleague Nick Bozzone agrees. "No longer are ads strictly focused for television alone…Audio content needs to be able to play — and play well — on all sorts of speakers — everything from theatrical pre-movie ads, to the consumer's 5.1 home set-up, to playing out flat-screen speakers, to playing off of iPads, cell phones and headphones. The way your mix sounds on all of these mediums is a nod at how skilled and knowledgeable your mixer is." Ronen Tanchum, creative/technical director at The Artery VFX in New York City, has his eyes on virtual reality, which he says will become more nonlinear as it evolves. "The [VR] platform is evolving towards more game-like, interactive experiences where users are en- gaged and involved with the content. As the technology advances, the opportunity for rich, narrative experiences becomes more and more achievable." Staying abreast of new production technologies is just one challenge pros will face, says Tanchum. Handling vast amounts of data, workflows that push the limits of hardware, new software and the demands of realtime processing, also need careful consideration. Visit the Post Website for more insight! his is the time of year when many of us stop to reflect on the past 12 months — at what we've accomplished and learned and reassess our personal and professional goals for the year ahead. Here at Post, we're always staying on top of both the latest and developing trends and technologies, reporting on countless projects over the past year involving 4K, HDR, 3D, remote collaboration and, certainly with a noticeable spike, virtual reality technology. It's for this reason that our December Outlook issue is dedicated to these topics and trends that are most prevalent within the post community. Post's own Iain Blair gets things started on page 12 with his SWOT feature — where he speaks with some of the industry's top directors who address the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats facing our industry. What follows on page 16 is a mix of insightful articles from post community leaders, who share their thoughts on where we are now and where we're going in 2017. Contributions from Deluxe's Beast, Maxon, Magnopus, Fotokem, Blackmagic Design, JVC and many others cover a range of topics including acquisition, col- laborative workflows, virtual reality, editing, visual effects and more. Another annual Post tradition is our big anniversary bash — once again at Stitch Bar in NYC. The turnout from the post community was remarkable. A mix of studio creatives, manufacturers and product gurus were out in force to help us celebrate our 31st anniversary. Special thanks to sponsors Dell/EMC, Nvidia, Alt Systems, G-Technology and Sim Group for making this great party possible. Check out the highlights on page 4. A final note as we prepare to welcome 2017 — and what will surely be a tight Oscar race in February. Post has prepared a number of features this month covering some outstand- ing work in animation, visual effects, editing and cinematography. Our features on Moana, Passengers (our cover) and Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them begin on page 22. Cheers to the New Year, wishing all our readers a happy and healthy holiday season!
