DGA QUARTERLY 7 PHOTOS: (ABOVE, LEFT) DUSTIN SNIPES; (BELOW, LEFT) AVA DUVERNAY; (UPPER, RIGHT) JEFFREY MOSIER Dear Member: I know—in this time of enormous change and upheaval, you were probably counting on the DGA Quarterly to stay exactly the same. So it may come as a huge disappointment that we are determined to make this venerable craft journal better. We've listened to your feedback (both positive and negative) and have created a magazine that we hope is more relevant, more timely—with more first person stories and greater focus on tools, tips and techniques that will help you deal with change much better in the future. While we were at it, we also added a stronger emphasis on visuals, with bolder and more prominent photos—to show and not just tell. At the same time, we've kept your favorite features, such as the DGA Interview and our Photo Essay—celebrating the Guild's past along with the present. The cover story—celebrating the new wave of television directors who are pushing the envelope—also represents something else we're striving for in the magazine—a greater diversity of perspectives. By including fresh voices alongside established veterans and a greater mix of stories about all the genres in which our members work, we hope to bring to you the experiences of the full range of our membership. I want to thank our new editor, Steve Chagollan for bringing this vision of the DGA Quarterly to life. Steve comes to us with 20-plus years at Variety and other publications with an in-depth knowledge of directors and our industry that he has brought to bear in the creation of this issue. We know change isn't always fun, but "repealing and replacing " our Quarterly has been in the works for over a year, and we feel we've created a new mixtape that should keep you entertained for years to come. Let us know what you think. Email Steve at schagollan@dga.org with your thoughts on the issue, and who knows, we just might publish them as part of a representative sample in our next edition. And if it's all too much for you, remember what one change artist said: "Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change we seek." Best regards, Paris Barclay » Coordinating the schedules of highly in-demand talents for a photo shoot isn't easy, but DGAQ had the good fortune of gathering our pilot direc- tors together at Dustin Snipes' L.A. studio for a cover photo session. Needless to say, there was a lot of mutual respect in the room, not to mention a comrades-in-arms conviviality, which in this day and age leads to the inevitable selfie... What happens when you get a bunch of directors in a room? P R E S I D E N T ' S L ETT E R
