DGA QUARTERLY 11 PHOTO: DAN DOPERALSKI Dear Members: Since landing at DGA Quarterly in August, my knowledge of the Directors Guild of America, its importance in the entertainment landscape and the deep reservoir of talent within its ranks has grown each and every day. It's been an exhilarat- ing and humbling experience, with the recogni- tion that this is by far the most gratifying sandbox I've ever played in. Consider the content of this Quarterly a tip of the iceberg in terms of the depth and breadth of work accomplished by DGA members, and my aim is to dig even deeper in ensuing issues. From Paul Brownfield's cover story about the different ways directors established an aesthetic template on the pilots of some of today's most talked-about shows to Jon Bur- lingame's examination of the alchemy between director Denis Villeneuve and composer Jóhann Jóhannsson—which kicks off our new "Collaborators" series—my hope is that these offerings represent a fresh and engrossing departure for the magazine. Of course, while change is healthy, I also recognize the importance of features our readers have appreciated all along, like "Shot to Remember" and "Screening Room." The fact that we have top-flight talents like Miguel Sapochnik and Tom Ford weighing in with their thoughts and observations in this regard fills the bill in edifying ways. Additional stories about the myriad approaches to the biopic, the look and feel of TV series derived from comic books and graphic novels, profiles on the likes of Kelly Reich- ardt and Garth Davis, and our centerpiece DGA Interview with two-time Oscar winner Alexander Payne round out a package I hope will give our members helpful insight into how their peers think and work. Creating a magazine of this caliber is never the work of just one person. I'd like to thank and recognize President Paris Barclay for his overarching vision of a redesigned Quarterly as well as for the rich and thoughtful guidance of National Executive Director Jay Roth and his Guild staff team. And I would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge the efforts and dedication of my Quarterly cohorts, particularly art director Nancy Duckworth, whose exquisite taste and talent make these pages sing.
