Fred Phillips was hired in 1966 as a make-up supervisor for Star
Trek, where he worked on all 78 episodes. He also did the make-
up for Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979. Mr. Spock's
(Leonard Nimoy) ears had to be molded daily in order to look right
for the cameras. They were made of an expensive type of latex but
tore easily, sometimes when being removed or during an action
scene. On a limited budget, Phillips designed the original Klingons,
Romulans and all the other early Star Trek aliens. In the early
'80s, he began to have serious eye problems and retired from the
demands of weekly TV work. He was asked to create make-up for
Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan in 1982, but was unable to do so
because of his failing eyesight. Photo courtesy of Bill Forsche.
