To quote Benjamin Franklin: "We must all hang together, or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately." While the middle of the country was decidedly red and voted accordingly, California was almost a separate nation. We actually had many triumphs, electing many legislators whose relationship with IATSE members will affect our everyday lives. US Representatives DeSaulnier, Pelosi, Brownley, Chu, Schiff, Cardenas, Sherman, Napolitano, Lieu, Becerra and Bass are all "IA-friendly." State Senators Atkins, Lara, Stern and Portantino all have open doors to us. California State Assembly members Bonta, Berman, Bocanegra (who co-authored AB 1839), Dababneh, Bloom, Gomez, Ridley-Thomas, Calderon and Anthony Rendon, Speaker of the California State Assembly, have all established relationships with the IATSE. We have their ear. Have you ever read our bulletin and wondered what the "EUC" or "CIC" stands for or what it does? The Entertainment Union Coalition was formed as a legislative action group including not only the IATSE, but also the Teamsters, the DGA, SAG/AFTRA and other entertainment unions to create a powerful legislative force that could no longer be ignored. The entertain- ment workers throughout California realized we needed to "get in the game" rather than sit back and let the world run over us. We had lost so much production that people had lost their livelihoods, their homes and more. As a result, the EUC was the driving force that worked with California legislators, other unions and businesses to make a cohesive unit that achieved AB 1839, helping to bring California film and television production home. After that success, we still need to nurture our relationships so we keep ahead of the game. The name has now been officially changed to CIC—the California IATSE Council—to specifically attend to the needs of IA members, and our entire state is represented. Film and television tax incentives are not the only accomplishment of the coalition. By broad- ening our political strength, we were also an active part of working on legislation that directly affects all of our lives. Local 706 has been instrumental in assisting Paramount Studios to achieve its plan to improve the lot with new soundstages, better traffic flow, the ability to store equipment on the lot rather than importing it, to create a more efficient and modernized working environment, all while protecting the historic landmarks. Speaking for our crews, the improvements will make working at the studio safer and more in times with current and future technologies. We kicked the hornet's nest, then the "special interests" fought it out themselves. The final result was that a bill has now been signed by the governor that protects our members and con- sumers from exorbitant surprise bills for healthcare services provided at in-network facilities by out-of-network doctors. Many have been shocked to find that doctors, anesthesiologists, etc., they thought were "in-network," were actually not, and were forced to pay exorbitant bills with no solution. The legislation limits a patient's financial obligation to no more than what he would have owed if the provider had been in-network. AB 533 (Bonta) In the upcoming year, the CIC will be working toward crafting a bill to see that all workers who are hired in California are provided the opportunity to be covered under California Disability Insurance when they travel out of state. We are also involved in the California Fair Wage Act to explore new avenues for gender-based crafts to see if we can make some headway. Our artistry changes on a daily basis and we work hard to stay at the top of the heap. The challenges we face in our sequestered worlds are hard enough. It's nice to know that somebody's look- ing out for our real-world problems too. We're a "special interest" group too.
