THE MESSAGE L ocated on an über hip stretch of Vermont Avenue in Los Angeles's Los Feliz neighborhood, Agave Tequila Bar offers local hipsters an alternative to their daily dose of PBR. With 230 tequilas behind the bar and authentic, affordable food, owner Jasbir Singh is devoted to bringing his customers a new experience. "I wanted to do a totally different concept from anything else in this neighborhood," explains Singh, who has operated several bars and restaurants in the area for the past 12 years. "Tequila is one of the hot- test spirits out there, and it's time that there's something like this here." With as many tequilas as Singh pours, there's defi nitely something for everyone, but THE TASTING PANEL fell in love with the bar's signature Skinny Margarita, made with 100% agave nectar and Par- tida tequila. —Rachel Burkons L Los Feliz neighborhood, Bar their daily dose of PBR. F our years ago, David Dobbs sold Red Carpet Wine & Spirits, a top-volume retail store in Glendale, CA. Returning to his roots in Bakers- fi eld, in California's Central Valley, Dobbs and his wife Tamera have had plenty of time to open Imbibe, a top-notch wine and spirits store that also features a superb Enomatic wine bar and a 3,000 square-foot wine storage facility—the only one of its kind serving the Bakersfi eld area. Barely a year old, the exquisite fl ow and layout of Imbibe invites Bakersfi eld wine lovers to fi nd something new. "This area is new to imports," explains Dobbs, whose temperature-controlled Specialty Room houses winedom's latest hits—$30 and higher—as well as old favorites such as fi rst growths and a plethora of great fi nds. "I'd been stockpiling wine for three years before we opened," he adds. In addition to the Specialty Room, the main room at Imbibe features value wines from all over the world, 200 import and domestic microbrews, a selection of premium spirits and to-die-for gour- met Godiva chocolates. —Meridith May PHOTO: MERIDITH MAY David Dobbs at his new store, Imbibe Wine & Spirits.
