THE MESSAGE Whether THE TASTING PANEL goes to the brand execs or the brands call us, there is an abundance of news to report, from the latest releases to behind-the-scenes experiences with some of the world's most infl uential importers, winemakers, distillers . . . well, you name it. Brief Encounters We may not have enough pages in each issue to devote as much attention as we would like to each person whose path we cross, but please note that if it's in the publication, we deem it noteworthy —Meridith May, Publisher & Executive Editor A World Malbec Day in NYC Wanda Kaliciñsky, Mendoza's reigning Queen of the Wine Harvest. 16 / the tasting panel / june 2012 rgentina took over Manhattan for World Malbec Day in April. The hottest ticket in town was a gala event at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, where Argentine dignitaries, offi cials from the Mendoza and Argentina tourism offi ces and Wines from Argentina hosted a tasting and tango party for some 350 guests. Wanda Kaliciñsky, Queen of the Wine Harvest, was the dazzling guest of honor, taking a glittering seat beside offi cials at the press conference, which reported on the general good health of the wine industry and the growing signifi - cance of Mendoza as a wine-tourism destination—a concept nearly unheard of ten years ago. Last year's event was held at the New York Public Library. Moving it to the Guggenheim this year was a show of confi dence for Malbec, not only as a presence in the market, but as a tastemaker. "Today we are at the Guggenheim Museum to rein- force our presence. We want to show the New York City publics, which is sophisticated in their consumer habits, the best of Malbec," said Ambassador Jose Luis Perez Gabilondo, Consul of Argentina in New York. The ambassador said imports to the United States have increased tenfold in the past year, noting at this time last year, Argentina was the fi fth largest importer of wine to the United States; this year it is the fourth, with 220 million liters exported. Then, it was on to the party: a tasting of 19 produc- ers in the grand entry of the Guggenheim, where the entertainment included live music, tango dancing and many photo opps with the reigning queen. —Lana Bortolot PHOTO BY LANA BORTOLOT
