A Delicious Diversity of Rioja Rosado The stylistic diversity of Rioja rosado is clearly seen in the wines of these seven producers, all available to the American market. Marqués de Cáceres 2011 Rioja Dry Rosé ($10) Bright coral, art deco pink color and nose fat with strawberry fruitiness; qualities follow- ing up with soft, round, fleshy, unabashedly fruity sensations that fill the mouth, underlined by soft acidity; finishing completely dry. Convenient screw- cap closure. VINEYARD BRANDS Muga 2011 Rioja Rosé ($11) Pale pink-salmon color, more like a blush than a typical rosé; waxy white flower perfume predomi- nating in nose, with watermelon and cherry undertones; medium body punctuated by zingy acidity – not sharp, but rather bright, crisp, and pert in its fruit driven zest – lingering dry and easy. Natural cork finish. FINE WINES OF SPAIN CUNE 2011 Rioja Rosado ($15) 100% Tempranillo style, with a refinement that shows: bright, clear, medium pink color; nose of sweet red cherry and strawberry, verging on red currant; zesty, tart edge to finely textured, light-medium bodied, emphatically fruity qualities; finishing firmly dry and mouth-watering. Screwcap convenience. EUROPVIN Vivanco 2011 Rioja Tempranillo- Garnacha Rosé ($13) Super bright, almost neon pink color indicating considerable phenolic extraction; bright cherry aroma with interesting minerally nuances with a touch of salinity; tart edged entry leading to exuberant fruit sensations with good, bouncy, cushiony feel; finishing dry and lively. Synthetic cork finish. OPICI WINES Cortijo 2011 Rioja Rosado ($10) A connoisseur's style, 50% Tempranillo/50% Garnacha estate bottling from the prestigious Alta Rioja: deep, rosy-red pink color, nearly as intense as Vivanco's; nose redolent of watermelon and strawberry, teeming from the glass; soft entry, becoming crisply etched and fullish in the mouth; red fruit qualities taking on pear-like juiciness, rounding out into long finish. Natural cork. OLÉ IMPORTS Conde de Valdemar 2010 Rioja Rosado ($10) A year older than other rosados tasted, yet just as bright and fresh: medium red-tinged pink color; intense nose of red cherry, citrus and stones; good, fleshy feel in the mouth with lightly tart edges; finishing round, gentle. Synthetic cork closure. CIV USA Marqués de Riscal 2010 Rioja Rosé ($10) Old Worldish, 100% Tempranillo, medium- bodied style focused on dryer, gentler, round, moderate sensations: orange tinged pink color; floral and sweet cream notes leading to soft, easy, low key flavors on the palate. Natural cork finish. SHAW-ROSS INTERNATIONAL IMPORTERS june 2012 / the tasting panel / 113
