3 STORAGE SOLUTIONS MARCH 2016 torage options continue to increase for post production professionals. Solid State Drive (SSD) technology, object storage and higher-capacity spinning disk technology with the availability of 10TB hard drives offer more solutions than ever before for every storage need. Here's a look at what some of the industry's leading manufacturers are offering. FACILIS Facilis (www.facilis.com) is exploring "the optimal way to approach SSD technology for post production," says James McKenna, vice president of marketing and pre- sales support, and will demonstrate some of its latest offerings at NAB 2016. "It's important to remember that SSDs are ubiquitous in enterprise already, but that market has read/write characteristics and demands different from those in post production and digital me- dia. While SSDs are very fast, they can be more costly and have a finite number of writes in their life cycle. So it's a matter of determining how they best fit into our customers' workflows." Facilis believes hybrid products, which combine spin- ning disks and SSDs, currently offer "the best value for money" with "no box-to-box transfers" required, McKen- na says. To that end, the company introduced the Terra- Block Hybrid24 hybrid array, which combines a drive group of eight SSDs for ultra-high performance with a larger drive group of traditional high capacity spinning disk drives for a total capacity of 136TBs or 144TBs. Shipping since last summer, the Hybrid24 has been adopted by SAS Institute's video department, broad- caster ABS-CBN in the Philippines, and a number of US post facilities. "We also expect the product to be very popular among boutique post houses that want to have the ability to handle any file format, 4K and up, without switching to direct-attached storage," McKenna says. Brand new is the TerraBlock SSD8, an SSD 8-drive enclosure, which can be added to an existing TerraBlock system or other SAN or NAS systems for those who "want to hybridize the workflow. It's small, lightweight, pretty portable and fast enough to handle a lot of ingest streams simultaneously on set. It's also ideal for field production and OB trucks," he reports. The Hybrid24 and SSD8 will be showcased at NAB along with Facilis FastTracker, a comprehensive appli- cation for cataloging, searching and viewing any media type within the TerraBlock system. It includes a desktop player that supports most popular image formats. S Qumulo is fairly new with its Qumulo Core NAS.
