Armando Licon is now a trainee hair stylist employed on Days of Our Lives; Carol Mitchell is now a journey- man hair stylist working on the Conan O'Brien pro- duction Conan. Our beloved Debbie Wilson passed away in 2012. The rest have either retired and/or taken an Honorable Withdrawal from membership. By the time of our 2009 negotiations, the cosme- tology unit had grown to 45 active cast members. By the time of our 2014 negotiations, the unit had nearly doubled again. Currently, we have 100+ active Theme Park hair stylists! Negotiations are an ongoing part of my job. We are always trying to organize new venues, and once organized, we have new contracts to negotiate and maintain. We currently have some two dozen individual signed Collective Bargaining Agreements up and down the state, with most of the major theater, musical theater, opera and ballet compa- nies in California. I negotiate an additional 5–10 Single Signatory Agreements annually for the SHN Theaters in San Francisco alone. It seems as though one-third of these agreements are in negotiations at any time. I'm either prepping for negotiations, in active negotiations, ratifying the agreements or putting the negotiated contracts back together after our members have ratified the contract. I do quite a bit of typing … We just completed negotiations with Silicon Valley Ballet of San Jose and Broadway San Diego, and we re-upped our agreement with the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. We are con- tinuing our negotiations with NBC/Universal—for our Network Television Agreement which covers KNBC, Telemundo, E! Entertainment Television and other game shows, talk shows and "gossip shows" (like Access Hollywood). Next up, we have talks with Cal Performances, which covers the productions at Zellerbach Hall on the UC Berkeley campus and Opera Parallèle in San Francisco—and we still have to drag the FOX Television Center stations (KTTV and KCOP) into a discussion of their agreement. It never ends … See you at the negotiating table, or see you in the wings!
