Local 706 For 100 years, the Pasadena Playhouse has pro- duced some of the most exciting and diverse theater offer- ings in Los Angeles County. The musical Waterfall was a recent example. Set in 1930s Tokyo, the play tells the story of a Thai student (Thai pop star Bie Sukrit) who falls in love with the young wife (Emily Padgett) of an older American Ambassador (Thom Sesma). This production was a hit and has now moved up to Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre, with plans to take it to Broadway next year. The beautiful hair and make-up were made possible by Department Head Hair & Make-up Raenae Kuaea, and her team of Chanthy Tach and Mary Warde; hair and make-up designs by J. Jared Janas. Currently, the production Breaking Through is on stage. Hair (15 wigs) and make-up designs by our own Rheanne Garcia— who credits Raenae and Chanthy as "the dream team" who brought the designs to life—and assisted by Stephanie Fenner and Vanessa Dionne. New member Raquel Bianchini is the new Associate Wigmaster for Los Angeles Opera. Congratulations, Raquel! These talented artists had already separated themselves from their former union, and had petitioned to be brought into the IATSE. This was granted by then-International President Thomas Short, and the "Theme Park Hair Stylist" classification was created. Of these original artists, 11 are still working at their craft at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim: Evelyn Araya, Mary Boots, Jennifer Brooks (also a Theater hair stylist), Kathleen Brown-Zablan (who also serves as our Disneyland steward and on our Executive Board), Bonnie Deal (our other Disneyland steward), Jan Fox, Dee Frame, Alma Romero (also a Theater hair stylist), Diana Santellan, Laura Tejada and Lisa Urbina. Louise Valenzuela and Barb Van de Walle have both recently retired. All are valued Disneyland 'cast members,' as well as Local 706 members in good standing. Several of "the Originals" have successfully moved on: Jennifer Barrios is now a Pink Contract hair styl- ist, and is the hair supervisor on the Broadway company of Matilda the Musical; Traci Boyd is now a Theater hair stylist; "This & That …"
