THE REVENANT B Y S I A N G R I G G K E Y M A K E - U P A N D P R O S T H E T I C S ( L E O N A R D O D I C A P R I O ) I n 2014, I was working on the film Suffragette when I received an email from Leonardo DiCaprio. He was to start work on a film called The Revenant and he wanted me on board. Little did I know then what an epic moviemaking experience I was letting myself in for. We had our first meeting in April 2014 and the picture wrapped in August 2015. The film is set in the 1820s and is based on the story of legendary trapper Hugh Glass, portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio. Whilst out scouting for game, Glass is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by his hunting part- ners. Amazingly, Glass survives the attack and sets out on a desperate journey to get back to civilization and seek revenge on the men that betrayed him. After I had committed to work on the film, I contacted Duncan Jarman, prosthetic make-up artist. Duncan and I have worked together on many films and he was my first choice to pro- duce Leo's prosthetics. Together we scrutinised and dissected the script, compiling a photo- graphic reference folder of ideas for key scenes. We had our first meeting with Alejandro González Iñárritu, the film's director, in Los Angeles, during which he explained the way the film was to be shot and gave us as much information as possible about the prosthetic and make-up needs for the film. Filming was to take place in some of the harshest locations on the planet, only natural lighting was to be utilised and the plan was to film everything with nominal cuts with no inserts, at this point in time Iñárritu's Birdman Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass
