september 2015  /  the tasting panel  /  67 ast issue I continued my search for William Grant's Rare Casks. The family name for these micro-blended, truly handcrafted bottles is Annasach, which, appropriately, is Gaelic for "rare." Thanks to this family-owned company's deep stocks of old and exceptionally limited casks of both grain and single malt whisky, it's now possible for discerning clients to create their own unique expressions under the gentle guidance of Grant's Master Distiller Brian Kinsman. And the far-sighted spirit buying teams from Binny's, BevMo!, Total Wines & More and Spec's Liquors have taken this very special opportunity to create their own limited edition small batch releases. These are truly bespoke one-off blends created to please the clients' own taste—and I can guarantee that because, as I've experienced for myself, here, the client is the blender. The visit is effectively a one-to-one tutored session on the art of blending from a master: something that very few whisky enthu- siasts will ever get to experience and truly a lifetime memory that should be on every whisky lover's bucket list. Depending on your level of knowledge and expertise, Kinsman guides you deeper into the art and science of blending, and reveals just a few tricks of the trade along the way. WILLIAM GRANT & SONS RARE CASKS GHOSTED RESERVE CELEBRATES THE SPIRIT OF DEPARTED DISTILLERIES Samples from various casks are poured for a blending session.
