Because of this situa- tion, it is believed that cooperation among CHTA members is now more essential than ever for the well-being of the entire Caribbean tourism industry. In a meeting of Caribbean tourism ministers and officials that took place in Puerto Rico just prior to Marketplace 2010, CHTA endorsed the effort of unity among Caribbean governments. A specific initiative involved the creation of a marketing fund for the region and for each individual destination. It is hoped that the fund will be supported by a tax on airline pas- senger tickets to the Caribbean, following the precedent set by theU.S. Travel IndustryAssociation, which recently instituted a $10 ticket tax to fund its U.S. marketing and promotion efforts worldwide. In the theme of tourism-supported economic develop- ment, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company announced sev- eral events to take place in Puerto Rico in the first two quarters of 2010 that would create demand for more than 11,000 roomnights. These events included the Puerto Rico Open in March, the only Professional Golf Association event held in the Caribbean and Saburea Puerto Rico, a Continued from page 31 Management Association’s (RCMA) World Conference and Exposition, Tampa Bay Convention Center, Tampa, FL. Additional events included the Latin Billboards &Music Conference inApril, the first time that the awards show was held outside the continental U.S. And for sports enthusiasts, the Central American & Caribbean Games were held in July and August, bringing in fans from North, Central and South America as well as the Caribbean. In addition to roomnight revenue, each of these events gen- erated income from ticket sales, transfer costs, entertainment, tours, restaurant and other visitor expenses. These events con- tributed more than $8 million to Puerto Rico’s economy dur- ing the first half of the year alone. Based on the upbeat mood and forward-thinking projec- tions at CaribbeanMarketplace 2010, the growing enthusiasm for next year’s event, it appears that theworst of the travel and tourismslumpmay have passed for PuertoRico and the rest of the Caribbean.
