2 FALL 2026 EDITOR'S LETTER EDITOR'S LETTER Welcome to the fall issue of the Costumer Quarterly! We're delighted to take you behind the seams with the costume department on the Emmy award-winning production The Pi (HBO MAX), its second season released and third season going into production. This massive crew ensures all the trauma remains on the screen, and not behind it. We'd be remiss if we didn't give a special shout-out to series star and executive producer Noah Wyle, who spoke out so eloquently in Burbank this past March, joining IATSE President Mahew D. Loeb, Sen. Adam Schiff, and Rep. Laura Friedman in a hearing to advocate for federal film and television production tax incentives. Leaving behind the drama in the emergency room, we also visited the exuberant Costumers on the production High Potential (ABC), a police procedural with a unique blend of comedy, drama and a new spin on the eccentric consultant. High Potential's second season represents the first time a 10 p.m. drama has taken the #1 spot for a broadcast entertainment series in 26 years, when ER last held that honor in 1999. (The Editorial Team is still debating whether this coincidence constitutes a 'Noah Wyle' theme for this issue.) Though Costumers can spend days buried in the details on our costume racks, we still pay aention to the big picture. One of the current concerns is the studio consolidations. Our "Activism" piece looks at how we got here, and what these changes might mean for us. Our "Spotlight" focuses on Specialty Costumer and Digital Designer Kourtney Coats, who brings his expertise in 3D-printing technology to the Costume Department. Even though Local 705 wasn't where he expected to end up, we're excited he's with us. If you've ever watched a film or TV show that heavily features uniforms, it's likely a Uniform Costumer was involved in researching, procuring, and dressing much of what you saw on screen. CQ caught up with two of our Uniform Costumers, Gabe Gerber and Steven Butler, giving us a chance to see the different paths these experts can take. Continuing our series on our Independent Signatory Costume Houses, we chaed with Jenny Han and Myung Oh of Stitch Costume. This union workroom is thriving despite launching just as the world shut down for COVID, surely a testament to the skill and determination of its owners. And finally, we note the induction of costume community legend Luster Bayless into the Hall of Great Westerners by the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. Luster Bayless was the founder of United-American Costume Co., now run by his daughter, 705 member Diana Foster.
