It was certainly something to aspire to, but not a goal that could be reasonably achieved. At the end of almost every project, I and the rest of my crew would receive the same email from the studio asking us, "What green practices did you implement during this season?" And almost every time, my reaction was the same: How *were* we green? The unfortunate answer? We weren't. Our productions built one-off sets that were filmed for half a day and then sent straight to the dumpster. We carved massive foam environments that couldn't realistically be reused. We rarely rented. The environmental footprint of Production Design felt unavoidable, and tepid compromises like not using plastic water bottles rang pretty hollow. The question itself felt performative, as if acknowledging the problem was enough. That mindset started to shift post-pandemic. Supply chain disruptions, material shortages and rising costs forced some productions to ONE SET, FOUR CORONERS A. EPISODE 2, CORONER'S OFFICE. PRODUCTION STILL. B. LUPOLD COUNTY MORGUE.
