This was a very different method of filmmaking that was key to the first film's success, but that they were, nonetheless, very used to from their expansive, colorful and long careers. The thing about designing for a mockumentary is that there does not have to be a consistent visual style that ties all of the sets and scenes together. Each set had its own unique story, personality and requirements in order to support each character's past or the band's present. In the beginning of the film, viewers catch up with each musician in the places where they had been spending their time since the band's last encounter fifteen years prior. For Nigel Tufnel, the crew converted a retail space on Magazine Street in the Lower Garden District to his cheese and guitar shop which was to be located in a quaint English countryside town. With a lot of input, including reference images from the actor Christopher Guest, we minimized the existing space with new set walls and shelving. Set decorator Kim Murphy and her team enlisted a local cheese shop to consult and dress in real cheeses that would actually be available to that geographical region with a request to feature Stilton, Guest's favorite.
