alternate realities. The movie Monsters, Inc. came to mind, and we searched all the secondhand stores for unusual doors. For the alien, we chose a door that was shorter than the character, so he would have to duck upon entering and exiting; it's part of the comedy. We also spread out the towers and created more breathing space, as well as a redesign for each element. That was meticulously shown in Drew Monahan's concepts, for which he used Unreal Engine. Three distinct spaces determined the size of Quantum Unfolding Chamber, which ran the full 200-foot length of the stage. Each chamber was designed as an octagon, and the space between them was closed by additional towers. Director of photography Sam McCurdy bathed them in turquoise and orange light and we had an environment to play in. The VFX department extended the world to infinity. Above it hung the element that killed Chris Two, resembling a torpedo, designed by me and built by the SPX team. Back to the doors! In the eighth episode, the characters dressed in orange spacesuits and helmets by costume designer Michael Crow wander around the Quantum Unfolding Chamber, opening the different doors, most of which remained locked. Then suddenly a door gave, and a character was standing at the precipice of a Black Hole. Another door led to Zombieland, and another to the Hieronymus Bosch planet, and finally, the pink door opened to Candyland. Candyland was the only practical set we needed. I started by studying the game of the same name. In the end, the only thing I kept from it was the multi-colored and curving road the characters traversed. The environment was a different story. I began with something very elaborate, with multiple trees and windmills scattered amongst the hills. A few months E. QUANTUM UNFOLDING CHAMBER. ILLUSTRATION BY DREW MONAHAN. F.
