successfully accomplished after a few tests by prop maker Beau Harrison and the makeup department. The set that would bring the band and their music back together was our largest stage build, the rehearsal studio. The band had practiced at a local New Orleans studio and really enjoyed the laid-back, layered (read cluttered), homey vibe of that space and requested that we do the same for the film, albeit slightly elevated. The largest part of my research went into sound design. I knew that we would be able to execute a New Orleans aesthetic for camera, but I was also determined to make sure that the space would allow for a quality acoustic experience since all of the practical aspects of the room included playing live music while being recorded. Sound panels and their different types of foam, angled walls, insulated ceilings, acoustic absorption, sound diffusion and so many other technical considerations were important and I was in the middle of a crash course. The construction and scenic teams were steadfast in their effort to support the specialized needs of the space. We created custom wood sound diffusion panels that are seen throughout and sprayed on foam, then painted a raised portion of the ceiling above the drummer's platform. With a basic, but sufficient understanding of sound design and its impact on the architecture of the space, I was then able to layer on the finishes, materials and colors to make the studio feel like home. One of the highlights of my career will be Beatle's legend Paul McCartney walking onto the set, then scanning the fake, but functional, music studio with a satisfied nod and saying, "Yeah, that looks about right." I wish I could frame that moment on my wall.
