B M & T ••• July/August 2025 ••• www.blackmeetingsandtourism.com 19 In the meetings world, "second tier" doesn't mean second best. It means smarter budgets, shorter commutes, and deeper connections, especially when cities deliver top tier service without the inflated price tag. Across the country, mid-sized destinations are investing heavily in modern convention centers, first class hotels, and cultural experiences that honor history while inviting innovation. These are places that know how to host with intention. They offer the scale and service planners demand without the barriers that come with oversaturated markets. This feature highlights seven destinations where planners will find state-of-the-art facilities, deeply rooted African-American cultural experiences, and engaging cityscapes that support both productivity and purposeful downtime. COLUMBUS, GA Columbus, Georgia is a study in transformation. Once defined by industry, the city has reemerged as a destination where heritage, hospitality, and high-functioning meeting infrastructure align in one walkable downtown. At its center is the Columbus Georgia Convention & Trade Center, a for- mer ironworks facility that now houses over 60,000 square feet of adaptable event space. Its exposed brick, vaulted ceil- ings, and built-in AV capability give planners an edge: his- torical ambiance paired with professional-grade function. Meeting hotels are within easy reach. The Columbus Marriott, located just across the street, features over 5,000 square feet of meeting space and nearly 200 guest rooms. Hotel Indigo offers a boutique experience along the river- front, with rooftop event options, 150 rooms, and proximity to the RiverCenter and Civic Center. A third option, the Hampton Inn Downtown, provides convenience for budget- conscious planners without compromising location. All three properties are within walking distance of the convention cen- ter, restaurants, and entertainment. The convention district is designed for ease. Attendees can move between venues, lodging, and dining without the need for shuttle service. Columbus's compact downtown allows planners to create tight, efficient schedules while still allowing for spontaneous networking, local exploration, or breakout gatherings in casual settings.
