M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S 29 anecdote revealed that the sound for the lava scene was a combination of actual lava, boiling tomato soup, and gravy, with some gunshots sprinkled in for sharp pops. Working with John Williams has been a highlight for Ben. While having the utmost respect for John and the power of music, Ben revealed that designing and mixing sound effects with music is similar to a dance in that it only works if the various elements work together, with no element ever overpowering another. "People in sound should not forget that they are entertainers and are contributing to the net effect of entertainment on the audience. We're working for the audience." When asked by an audience member what his advice was for people new to the sound industry, Ben replied that everyone should begin by building their own library. He encouraged everyone to get a quality portable recorder and bring it everywhere. "If anything sonically catches your attention, record it! Doing this gives your sound effects meaning that represents you and your taste and interests. Everyone can learn the technical basics in school, but your artistic experience is your own and will distinguish you." Ben also stressed, "Don't lose your sense of humor, no matter how much pressure you feel!" We are honored to have partnered with the professionals at the Fox Studio Lot, as we are both committed to the mission of building a sound community that brings people together. Future events to host screenings, sound panels, and more are already in the works, so stay tuned! The MPSE extends our heartfelt appreciation to Matthew Wood, Ben Burtt, and Eric Marks for a rousing Q&A. Special thanks to Dawn Rosenquist, Stacey Robinson, Michael Carolus, Marielle Abaunza, and the entire team at the Fox Studio Lot for one of our most successful events to date and for making this Star Wars Day one to remember. You can find a link to this event's photo album on all MPSE social media accounts. May the Fourth Be With You!
