10 • THE ARTISAN SUMMER 2025 CRAFT EDUCATION Work Smarter, Not Harder B Y C L A I R E A L E X A N D R A D O Y L E M A K E - U P C R A F T E D U C A T I O N P R E S I D E N T Our Craft Meeting in March 2025 was its usual blend of brand introductions, product sampling, and interconnective networking. We experienced a full room of in-person attendees and a great turnout online. I have been pleased to be able to continue with the hybrid technology for our meetings, enabling our members to have access to education when we reach in-person capacity, or if they are out of town. Reflecting on history, the second Industrial Revolution in the United States brought forth advancements and developments in transportation and communications. Coming out of that era in the 1930s, industrial engineer Allan H. Mogensen coined the phrase: "work smarter, not harder." Known as an authority and the "father of work simplification," Allan used filmmaking technology to study people, aiding his consultant career in workflow practices. As we move into the Fifth Industrial Revolution (aka Industry 5.0), we are incorporating these advancements in technology to include an awareness of long-term sustainability and ethics. I was pleased to have two working make-up artists share their experiences using technology in their workflow practices to help aid in efficiency and self-promotion. Makeup to Go!'s Tania D. Russell shared a slideshow on marketing tips for make-up pros. Her "5 Small Things" presentation of turning "Downtime Into Primetime" shared her expertise using social media not only as a portfolio but also to promote and solicit business. "While waiting for work, create work and see where it takes you. Makeuptogo.com is designed to empower freelancers with resources, information and community." Local 706 make-up artist Scott Wheeler, along with his daughter Lorie (an expert in AI-based design, aka artificial intelligence- based design), gave a presentation on the AI program Midjourney, showcasing how Scott uses it as a tool to assist when creating make-up concept designs and mood boards. Their presentation walked us through a conceptual design for a hypothetical make- up that can take a matter of hours to create. "Midjourney is a great tool for the exploratory stage to help me get ideas when I'm creating a make-up. I've been using and teaching Photoshop for more than 20 years and these programs work great in tandem. I can use my skills in Photoshop to really refine and personalize the make-up concepts. What we used to spend days either sketching, sculpting by hand, photographing or in other programs, can now be designed in a matter of hours and quickly sent as a JPG via email or in Google. AI, as in the case of any powerful tool, with consistent use and practice, comes greater efficiency and results." Éminence Organics and Glow Recipe, two environmentally conscious companies, shared brand samples of their skincare. We had a reintroduction to Cinema Secrets, given by the granddaughter of the late Local 706 make-up artist, Maurice Stein (Jessica Stein-Broughton). She discussed the history of her grandfather's brand and its rebranding, sharing products of the past and its modernized place in the present. Schwarzkopf shared in the day (presenting earlier at the Hair Craft Meeting), and we had VON: Voices of Nature Beauty introduce everyone to their brand of sustainable and biodegradable disposable beauty tools. Local 706 member Cool Benson lit up the room with his demonstration of his unisex brand, Daddy Cool Beauty. While he was chaperoning his daughter on her Broadway tour, it gave him a moment of pause to turn to a top skincare formulator to build his brand. "I leveraged my personal connections with a skincare formulator to turn the downtime during the WA/SAG strikes into an opportunity to create my BEAT Collection—a thoughtfully curated lineup featuring the PREBEAT Primer, the BEATMIX Tinted Moisturizer with SPF, the BEATOFF Makeup Remover Pads, and the Lip Scrub." Cool summed it up best in his presentation; "If you are a Daddy, have a Daddy, or want a Daddy, Daddy Cool Beauty is for YOU!"
