previous career in I.T., so his technical chops were already well established. For six weeks, Brent absorbed everything he could. From which way a 9V goes in the Comtek (I'll never forget, he somehow got that bugger in there backward AND managed to get the door closed), to how a boom op knows exactly where the frame line is just by knowing the lens size. He recalls some pivotal moments that have stuck with him to this day. "I remember an electrician was pushing a huge light that got stuck. Instinctively, I went to help him, but he stopped me cold saying, 'Not your department.' That was a learning moment. Now, as a supervisor, I know everyone has a role that needs to be protected." Brent was also impressed with Joe's organizational skills. Every cable, tweaker, and sound doohickey had a home that was labeled and easy to find. Coming from a school that was organized like a tornado-strewn neighborhood yard sale, he was stunned to realize it didn't have to be that way. Brent says his days with us were invaluable for his future career in post sound. He received firsthand, working knowledge of how the sound gets from us to him. He understands the issues the sound department are up against, the problems we have to solve, and now—thanks to me—he also knows the catering culinary splendor that is … huevos rancheros! (Again, he's from Michigan.) Through incessant badgering (his words), Brent was able to land yet another internship at a post house in Culver City called Sonic Magic. There, he kept the coffee hot and the sodas cold. In between those massively important duties (I'm serious. It's post. It requires a steady diet of coffee and cola), he would watch the dubbing sessions and shadow the editors. Eventually, he was given some Foley to cut, and his career was officially on track. He kept in touch with Kip Kroeger, who was helping produce the actors' and writers' short films which we shot on the weekends. They needed post sound, and Brent was happy to build his resume while garnering that much needed experience, as well as the hours to join the Editors Guild. He still popped in and out with us too, helping us upgrade the ADR room and eventually run sessions. Anywhere Brent could snag a little more knowledge, he was there.
