Along with discussions on the various aspects of set sound and his career, Peter provided information about what the CAS does and the value of membership. While there, Peter also took the opportunity to meet with local CAS members for dinner. A podcast of the discussion will be uploaded; we'll keep you posted. Events Wrap-Up The MPTF/IATSE fundraiser, Day at the Ranch, was held on Sunday, November 10, at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu, CA. Attendees enjoyed a great lunch buffet, auction, raffle, lots of fun outdoor activities, and much more! Some of the activities included paddleboat rides, carousel rides, an obstacle course, and the dual axe throwing challenge—which was sponsored by the CAS! Support helps workers currently facing life's challenges and enables MPTF to continue helping industry workers in times of need, including financial assistance, subsidized childcare, and caring for aging parents. Day at the Ranch Netherlands Film Festival On Saturday, September 29, CAS members and guests, along with members of the Local 479 sound community, gathered at The Springs Cinema & Taphouse in Atlanta, Georgia, for fellowship, discussion, and a viewing of Edgar Wright's Baby Driver. This was Atlanta's first in-person CAS event and Baby Driver Mixer, Panel, and Screening began with drinks and appetizers, along with a raffle for two tickets to the 61st CAS Awards. We were thrilled when Steve Gonzalez CAS had his name called as he has been an enthusiastic volunteer throughout the years! Following the socializing, attendees were able to hear stories about capturing the production sound for the film. Moderated by production sound mixer Whit Norris CAS, the panel included Baby Driver's production sound mixer, Mary Ellis CAS, who was nominated for an Academy Award for her work on the film. Mary shared a wealth of experience about her team's process, with a focus on preparation, interdepartmental communication, and technical innovation. Joining Mary on the panel were playback/ Pro Tools operator Alex Lowe, boom operator James Peterson, and sound utility Thomas Doolittle. After the very insightful discussion, the afternoon culminated with a viewing of Baby Driver in 4K and Atmos! Whit Norris CAS, moderator & production sound mixer Mary Ellis CAS, production sound mixer CAS Secretary Lindsey Alvarez CAS has fun at the CAS-sponsored dual axe throwing activity.
