M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S 5 CHRISTINA HORGAN MPSE Editor I MPSE Wavelength LETTER FROM THE EDITOR O N TH E COVE R :Mark Lanza, MPSE President: (2020-2024). Photo location Sony Pictures. "The meaning of life is to find your gift. To find your gift is happiness." —Terry Pratchett Welcome to Wavelength's Spring 2024 quarterly & MPSE's 71st Annual Golden Reel Awards follow-up! First and foremost, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the winners and nominees of our 71st Annual Golden Reel Awards. Hosted by the MPSE, this year's event was a spectacular affair held at the historic Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles on March 3, 2024. Special congratulations to Michael Dinner (Filmmaker Award honoree), and to Dane A . Davis MPSE (Career Achievement honoree). Be sure to revisit Eric Mark's fascinating interview with Dane "Rising from the Rabbit Hole" (Wavelength, Spring 2022). A special round of applause is due for both our incoming and outgoing officers and Board of Directors. I personally want to express my gratitude to the MPSE membership for entrusting me with a fourth term as an MPSE Board member. Serving on this prestigious Board has been an immense honor, and I am committed to contributing wherever I am most needed. David Barber MPSE, welcome as our incoming President. I eagerly anticipate the incredible visions you will bring to the MPSE, and I am ready to collaborate in helping to turn those visions into reality. Mark Lanza MPSE, your leadership has been nothing short of transformative. As David Barber aptly put it, "The ' world shifted' when you took the helm in 2020. Your vision and dedication have guided our Board of Directors to fulfill significant initiatives and more. I remember well, that day four years ago when you called me about helping to create a membership newsletter. The idea evolved into something more than just a 'newsletter.' At the end of that conversation, the plan was set into motion to create what would turn into the official publication of the Motion Picture Sound Editors. A committee was formed and MPSE Wavelength became a reality. Your foresight and support were instrumental in bringing this vision to life." It is with great pleasure that we feature Mark Lanza on the cover of this quarter's Wavelength, with Miguel Araujo MPSE masterfully capturing his story. I am excited to introduce two new initiatives for Wavelength. Firstly, starting with this edition, we are launching an opinion editorial department called "Sound Off OpEd." This platform provides MPSE members with the opportunity to express their views and opinions on issues relevant to our sound editing industry. Secondly, I am thrilled to announce our forthcoming annual Game Audio Edition, debuting with our Fall 2024 quarterly. Similar to our annual International Edition, this special edition will showcase articles from our game audio community, highlighting the diverse talents in game sound. If you have a compelling story to share about your career, experiences in game audio, features, or broadcast and streaming television, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at Wavelength@mpse.org. Lastly, I want to celebrate two significant milestones. Congratulations to Rachel Wardell for becoming MPSE's 1,000th member, and to Gabriel Gutiérrez for becoming our 1,001st member, marking our first international member from Spain! Welcome to both of you! As always, I'm thrilled to share this edition of Wavelength with you. Happy reading! Christina at the final proof and color check of the first edition of Wavelength 2020. Gabriel Gutiérrez, the first MPSE international member in Spain.
