ISEA Communiqué • isea.org March 2024 5 Upcoming events you should know about TEACHING & LEARNING ACADEMY CORNER Educators Rising Iowa Conference & Competition March 6, 2024 Lindquist Center, University of Iowa, Iowa City We are expanding our efforts for our Education Career Pathway as we engage in more intentional work to build Educators Rising Iowa. We have a high school chapter in Iowa City which the Aspiring Educators of Iowa at the University of Iowa chapter supports. Inspired by this work, the University of Iowa School of Education worked to receive a federal TEEP (Teacher Education for Equity through Partnerships) grant. Their focus is assisting their five partner school districts as they each develop an Educators Rising Iowa high school chapter. They have a specific goal to inspire and recruit more high school students to become elementary education majors, especially Black, Indigenous and people of color students. As the state Educators Rising Iowa coordinator, we are collaborating with them on this work and co-sponsoring our first state conference & competition. As the first established Educators Rising Iowa chapter, the Iowa City high school students will participate in the competition part of the conference. Three competitions are being offered in this initial state competition: children's literature – K-3; creative lecture; and public service announcement – teacher recruitment (team). The conference part will host breakout sessions with a panel of UI Aspiring Educators, information on college enrollment and what to expect, plus observing an interactive college class. After this event, we will continue to assist other high schools interested in establishing an Educators Rising Iowa chapter and to participate in next year's conference & competition. We are excited to expand this work and offer our first Educators Rising Iowa state event! For more information: www.edrisingiowa.org ISEA Aspiring Educators Conference March 22-23, 2024 Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites Des Moines – Northwest, Urbandale All ISEA Aspiring Educators members are invited to attend the annual ISEA Aspiring Educators Conference for free. Any teacher-prep student is invited to join at: hwww.mynea360.org Aspiring Educators dues are $20 ($15 for NEA-AE & $5 for ISEA-AE) plus campus chapter dues, if any. Once you become an ISEA-AE member, you are eligible to participate in our statewide events for FREE! To register for the conference: www.cvent.com/d/j1qbc4 The ISEA-AE Conference kicks off by opening with greetings from Emma Freyermuth, ISEA-AE chair, and Mike Beranek, ISEA president, who will also recognize the ISEA scholarship recipients. Then we will hear from the 2023 Iowa Teacher of the Year Krystal Colbert. Other sessions will focus on legislative update, legal information, racial and social justice, LGBTQ+ advocacy in education, mindfulness wellbeing, plus panels of early career educators and administrators. Along with all the learning focused sessions, there will also be AE sharing, networking opportunities, and fun.
