JOSEPH MELENDEZ, a SAG-AFTRA National and New York Board member, passed away on Sept. 10 at the age of 58. Melendez grew up in the Bronx, New York, and performed on stage before beginning his television career. He dedicated himself fully to both the craft of acting and his service to the union. A mentor, leader and teacher, Melendez began his committee service in 2009. He went on to chair the National Disciplinary Review Committee and New York Local Conservatory Committee, and he served as a member on over a dozen other committees, including the 2023 TV/Theatrical Contracts Negotiating Committee, where he fought hard to preserve the sustainability of the acting profession for generations to come. He was an inspiration to his students and an advocate for performers' rights. His stage and screen legacy will live on, along with his reputation for kindness and compassion. Melendez is survived by his wife Ashley.
