M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S 89 working on documentaries and short films, I circled back to work with Andrew as an assistant on Cosi (1995, Dir: Mark Joffe), Children of the Revolution (1996, Dir: Peter Duncan), and Oscar and Lucinda (1997, Dir: Gillian Armstrong, AFI winner Best Sound), at a time when the industry was navigating the transition from film to digital (mostly Fairlights in those early days). Following many years of working with different people on loads of great films, big and small, I had word that Andrew was unwell. It was 2013 and I'd just finished dialogue supervising The Great Gatsby (Dir: Baz Luhrmann). I decided to leave the team I'd been working with for many years and support Huzzah Sound, the company Andrew and his wife Adrienne had formed in the '90s. Felony (2013, Dir: Matt Saville) was a chance to hear Andrew laugh again, to hear him dissect a scene and determine what subtle sounds would support the story, to watch him listen carefully to the director and decipher what they wanted, and to navigate the mix with grace, humour, and wisdom. It gave me the chance to realise the way I worked was built partially on his foundations and acknowledge that my desire to give back through teaching was a reflection of his original generosity in giving me my start. As the work for Huzzah dried up, even though producers and directors swore they would continue to bring their work to the team, I wondered whether it was perhaps fitting to finish my sound editing career with Andrew when it had started with Andrew. Whilst I've never forgotten Andrew's influence on me (and to this day, carry a talisman from those last days at Huzzah), I also know there are LOTS of others in the industry who feel the same way; directors, producers, picture editors, and soundies alike carry on his legacy in the work they continue to create. Thank you, Andrew. ■ Author's notes: 1) Though several people in this article have the same surname, this is purely coincidental; they are not related to one another. 2) This article was compiled on the lands of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation.
