Kaufman, with the support of Olivia Peebles in New Mexico and Betsy Klompus in New York) were able to deliver the world of our film so completely. In a film such as this, the props are an integral part of the storytelling. Many are so carefully and perfectly chosen that they enter and exit the frame without audience awareness. However, the atomic bomb is perhaps the opposite, the idea of it tugging at viewers' subconscious even during scenes pertaining to something else entirely. While the film is about the choices of men, there is a gravity and importance to the representation of the bomb that we could not escape. As we diligently tried to maintain the budget, Chris conceded that he PRELIMINARY NOTES: DRAWN BY: FULL ASSEMBLY + EXPLODED GADGET JUSTIN MILLER REVISION: SHEET #: DRAWING TITLE: DATE: SCENES: SET NAME: SET# LOCATION: ART DIRECTOR: SAMANTHA ENGLENDER PRODUCTION DESIGNER: RUTH DE JONG TBD 07 JAN 22 166 SCALE: 01 NTS 4'-6" FWD CONE + FLANGE 2'-8 1 2 " X-UNIT 3'-0" CRANE 1'-5" 5'-2 3 4 " LIFT LUG TO RIB EDGE ~7'-0" EXTENTS 3'-9 3 4 " STAND ~5'-3 1 4 " JUNCTION BOX 4'-6" POLAR CAP 4'-3" STAND 3'-0" CRANE 5'-2 3 4 " LIFT LUG TO RIB EDGE 5'-8" SLED 2'-3" SLED 1'-5" 5'-8" SLED 3'-9" STAND ~5'-10" GADGET ~5'-9 3 4 " GADGET (2) TYPE "B" EQUATORIAL SEGMENTS W/ (1) ROTARY LUG & (1) TIE-OFF BLOCK EACH; POLAR CAPS ROTATED; "FORWARD CAP" POINTED INTO TOWER SHED; "AFT CAP" POINTED OUT OF TOWER SHED LIFT LUG ATTACHED TO CRANE GADGET SHOWN IN TRINITY TOWER CONFIGURATION; SANS CABLING AND CABLE STRAPS (2) JUNCTION BOXES FOR CABLING GADGET SPHERE SUPPORT SLED; SEE SHEET 10 FORWARD CONE; SEE SHEET 08 "B" PLATE; SEE SHEET 09 FIRING SET A.K.A. However, when I got together with Scott Fisher (SPX supervisor) and Guillaume, it was like, "We must build this entire bomb!" If there was a place to do less to save more, collectively, this did not feel like it. I think he is forever grateful; he ended up following the evolution of its creation more fully, and the entire sequence became much more complete. In areas like this, we tried to be smart about what we wanted to feature and why, and it became so important to the overall design and tone of the film. The bomb detonation concluded our New Mexico portion of the shoot, and we moved back to LA. And while we had some D.C. success in New Mexico, the one capital location that really did not exist there was the White House. We thought we'd found a godsend in the Nixon Public Library in Yorba Linda, where we'd long planned to portray the Truman Era version, but fate had other plans: Two days before load-in, the contract fell through. Disbelief rolled throughout the crew but, with actor availability set in stone, there was no choice but to sort out a solution. I had construction running crews twenty- A.
