We installed a pair of very large windows filling the openings of several existing arches and added a huge silk paneled wall with an enormous working fireplace for the tsar's bedroom. We also installed a stepped platform in front of the high altar for the tsar's throne with a tall, cantilevered framework to hang the Imperial-style drapery canopy. Syon House The interiors of this architectural treasure designed by Robert Adam has a variety of styles, including Neoclassical, Baroque, as well as a bit of Victorian Gothic Revival and has been used many times for filming. For us, the marble great hall and ante-room with their strong antique Roman influences resonated well with the Imperial style of 18th century revolutionary France, and served as Napoleon's military headquarters in Paris. We also made use of several other rooms for a variety of scenes of Josephine's Parisian life, including the grand staircase as the entry hall of the Beauharnais townhouse, and another Adam-designed room, The Long Gallery, as a gaming club. UK Cathedral One of the additional distant locations was a cathedral in the north part of England, which was used as Notre Dame, where we recreated the famous coronation scene as preserved in the famous historic painting by Jacques-Louis David. We incorporated the artist as a character in the film and included him painting a large detail of the painting being painted in his studio while Napoleon watches. F.
