and French ships with appropriate flags and rigging we managed to recreate two entire fleets with digital replications populating the harbor around the fort, as well as reusing the same ship for the various journeys which Napoleon makes to and from exile on the island of Elba and also returning to France from Egypt. Mdina, Malta: Streets of Paris Some of the Parisian scenes involving Josephine were shot in Malta in the provincial town of Mdina with its very narrow winding streets and Baroque architecture, as well as its impressive St. Paul's Cathedral square where the production staged a second local guillotine, as well as dressing an entire avenue of townhouses and shops for Napoleon's first arrival to the capital. Although the town is relatively unspoiled, there were quite a few out-of-period intrusions that had to be dealt with, such as modern signage, streetlights and modern plate glass shopfronts that required plugging over. There was quite a bit of paintwork to do as well as the local homeowners had a traditional preference for very rich bright colors on their façade windows, doors and balcony railings which all had to be toned down to suit our period palette UK Locations: Neoclassical Paris The bulk of the filming, and most of the locations, were to be done in the UK, primarily in and around London. One of our largest locations was a magnificent courtyard of a complex in London. We staged the large crowd scenes of the guillotine square and the execution of Marie Antoinette there in the complex's quadrangle, which had Georgian influences so involved covering up the modern central pool area with custom fabricated molded rubber stone mats which matched the existing paving, as well as installing a great many doors and window plugs to cover those which were out of period. The enormous size of the courtyard, 300-feet by 200-feet, required digital crowd replication to fill the entire square. The adjacent stone-cobbled side streets were used for entries and exits of the tumbrils that brought the condemned aristocrats to the scaffold through the Paris streets. A.
