store equipment, and a service road was hidden behind tall grasses. Using Google Maps, I tried different variations on how this house would then sit in the landscape, taking into consideration the views but also the sun orientation during the period of filming. When the final position of the house was set, Ross Murdoch (construction manager) and Janie Parker (Supervising Art Director) were able to put in place the meticulously thought out and imaginative on-site construction plan they had put together. Extremely cost-efficient and minimally disruptive to the environment, the main idea consisted in pouring concrete footings for the different farm buildings, then assembling a metal H-beam frame structure that would later receive the prefabricated elements…from the roof down. Most of the construction, pre-assembly, pre-paint and aging would be built in the mill at Docklands Studios back in Melbourne where other sets also needed to be built on two stages. This would also guarantee to be tight on budget during the 14-week build time despite the long driving distance and uncontrollable elements… and allow us to keep an eye on things. We had the basement built on stage, as well as the second-floor interior doubled on stage, to minimize the number of night shoots on distant location. And the Future Before heading to Australia, the soft prep time in Montreal was also utilized to work out the more futuristic visual aspects of the film. Joined by concept artists and precious collaborators Deak Ferrand and Paul Chadeisson, we locked in the concepts and kinetics of the space station, space rocket, chicken farm, agency drones, airplane and A.
