President Grover Cleveland.
Just one story of many, Hospitality Historiography high-
lights numerous Black hoteliers virtually unknown to
mainstream America like Annie Box, the proprietress
of the Mountain View Hotel; Maggie M. Steed who
built the first hotel in Paducah, Kentucky owned and
operated by an African-American woman; Robert
Reed Church Sr., first Black millionaire hotelier of the
South; and Madame Sara Spencer Washington, one
of America's first African-American female millionaires
– just to name a few.
Hospitality Historiography was written to enlighten, to
teach and to correct what many have learned in history
books and popular culture about the African-American
experience and our impact on the hospitality industry.
African-Americans imprint on the hospitality industry
landscape is indelible. You can't tell American history
without the presence of Black history. People need to
hear the complete narrative.
