LMGI COMPASS | Summer 2023 • 27 AND THE NOMINEES ARE… The call for submissions for the 10th Annual LMGI Awards opened in early April 2023. In they came—at first at a trickle, then a stream and finally, as the May 21 deadline approached, a deluge! The Film, Television and Commercial Award Committees eagerly waded in— researching, viewing and evaluating the more than 300 entries that poured in from around the world. Tasked with selecting those 15 or so submissions in each category that would move forward into the first round of voting by you—the LMGI membership—meant that we had to watch lots of TV and movies, our passion for knowing why stories are told where forever fueling our mission. We continue to be awed by the work of our colleagues whose creative contributions help bring movies and TV series to life all over the world. Location professionals in cities across the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, France, Spain, Hungary, Thailand, Japan, Australia and Africa—to name a few—brought many diverse and exciting projects to our attention. Whether a project eventually makes it into the first round of voting or not, or makes it onto the first ballot, but does not become a finalist, is never a reflection on the overall quality of work. The work always rises to the highest professional standards of our industry. We urge you all to continue to submit projects for our consideration. You will be putting a spotlight on your series, attracting new viewers and giving the committees a reason to watch something we might not have had on our radar. Each year is a new deal, whether it's an old favorite, something new or a new season of a familiar show with locations that suddenly grab our interest as they had not done before! As snapshots of our collective imaginations, this year's themes reveal what's on our minds: Family drama spiked with murder, bitter rivalry, love, friendship and betrayals; political intrigue, spy capers, mysteries, adventure and towns rife with corruption; the re-telling of pivotal moments in history, war and human atrocity. Whether steeped in the fantastical, the dystopian or the starkly realistic, the stories reverberate as reminders of past misdeeds but also acts of heroism. The struggle to be on the right side of history, or to find a path to personal redemption, inspires hope as we take viewers on a journey back and forward through time, history and, most importantly, place. Commercials have to tell the most story in the shortest amount of time. Locations help telegraph a product or promotional message instantaneously. While we look for locations that are integral to the action, motivation and tone of the storytelling in our TV, film and commercial submissions, the nominees for Outstanding Film Commission are all about solving the challenges of production. They open doors that make sometimes over- the-top requests to access incredible locations or impact a city's normal activity possible. The top five or six vote-getters in the first round of voting are now the nominees in each category. In the second round of voting, you will determine the winners for the 2023 LMGI Awards. They will be announced at the LMGI Awards gala on September 26 in Los Angeles. We hope to see you there—or following the ceremony livestreaming on YouTube!
