Instagram feeds of Millennial Minimalism and Scandinavian-Japanese-influenced interior design. To capture the trapped-in-a-maze feeling, I worked closely with Set Designer Alanna Dempewolff- Barrett to design a floor plan with contiguous rooms that flow as an enclosed loop. This is meant to make the house feel vast but confined. There are sight lines into other rooms, but we restricted views to the outside using clerestory and skylight windows (which helped with the expense of not needing backings for every side of the build). I wanted to predominantly fill the frame with the midtone gray plastered walls and vertical slats. For the opening shot of episode two, it was a joy to see director Jake Schreier and Larkin utilize this layout: Amy storms back into the house, curses in the kitchen, grabs towels in George's studio, points the gun at a crow in the atrium, curses through the living room, then enters the bathroom where Danny left his urine puddle. George's Studio It's the one place in the house Amy allows George free rein. Where she prefers him to keep all his vases. Sonny described George's father, Haru Nakai, as a looming figure in their lives. The crew created a shrine to Haru Nakai's work with small prototype models of Tamago chair iterations on the studio shelves. (There is also a kamidana for Haru in their master bedroom.) In the script, George's vases are pieces that Amy, and later Fumi, invalidate. I discussed with Sonny about the perception of art as being highly subjective. I felt strongly that George should have inherited some skill, at least with his privileged access to the art world and the kind of lifestyle that grants time to practice technique. Stylistically, Sonny wanted George's vases to emit a playful, innocent quality, a breezy perception toward life, and an aesthetic contrast to Amy's taste. We thought the trending amorphous blob A.
