To me, their house is the soul of the visual story and Camila is a grounding figure for Billy. We wanted you to feel that in the space. Brian: It's a very emotional show and I think those sets in particular are very emotional spaces. Jess: I also love the house for the record producer, Teddy. We found it before the pandemic, and as soon as I walked in, I knew it was the place. Lisa: We started with Quincy Jones as a jumping-off point for Teddy's environment. We knew he was the inspiration for the character. It was carefully curated to feel wealthy, but not overstated, to be relaxed, but also sophisticated—I really wanted that character to feel believable. Key Stage Build Sets Jess: My favorite built set is Ellemar Records, it just nails the mid- century aesthetic that all three of us adore. Lisa: That's one of my favorite sets, too. The color palette fit in with the rest of the show but was more sophisticated. There were a lot of architectural elements that were chosen very carefully without throwing in everything and the kitchen sink. This set gave me the opportunity to use elegant materials of the era, like black leather and chrome, which I purposely didn't use anywhere else. Brian: I'm really proud of Ellemar Records and the Miami and Chicago Hotel sets. Jess: The first half of the show, we designed a lot of personal spaces and homes. Once the band went on tour, we had a lot of hotel rooms. To bolster the tension between the two main characters, Billy and Daisy, it was important to us to make sure their hotel rooms were visually distinct. For the Miami Hotel, we focused on art deco, pastel colors and tropical motifs. Andi: The Miami Hotel rooms were really gorgeous and fun to do. Daisy, who is the Stevie Nicks of the band, was always a hot mess, so she had alcohol and drugs, her clothes and shoes were everywhere. Billy's hotel rooms were always much neater and in place to mirror his sober personality. A. INTERIOR ELLEMAR RECORDS, STAGE BUILD, SET PHOTO. B. INTERIOR MIAMI HOTEL, STAGE BUILD, SET PHOTO. C.
