Doing this on location was ultimately more work for the construction coordinator Luis Aguilar and his team, but the show also gained something intangible by filming in the actual space where rock history had been made. Lisa: For the set decoration, we really pored over the research and got into the nitty-gritty of things like "where exactly would the ashtray be near the mixing board?" My team learned a lot about audio equipment, from big shifts in technology during the '70s, down to small details like the masking tape used to label tracks on the Neve console. Brian: At the beginning of the show, we took a tour of Sound City. It was like going to school to learn how they recorded things in the '70s. Lisa: That's one of the things that we all love about this work; we get to immerse ourselves in a world that we might otherwise not be exposed to at all. You get to walk in other people's shoes to a certain degree to try and understand what their life was like and work to honor that. Hero Character Locations Lisa: To me, the band house was foundational to the whole story. We were creating both the nascent identity of the band, as well as the identity of the house itself before they arrived. A lot of these young artists didn't have much money, so they repurposed furniture that would have been cast-offs or hand-me-downs. The goal was to feel the presence of the person who was there before (scripted as an old woman who had passed away), as well as layers added by the band in the '70s like tapestries, shawls or other small details. Andi: The whole Laurel Canyon music scene was the biggest draw for me for this show…it's the crux of the book. Jess: The house of Billy and Camila, lead singer of the band and his wife, is one of the sets that I get the most questions about. People love it. Lisa: When we had Billy and Camila move into their own house, it was important to me to take some of the elements from the band house with them, even as they were creating a life for themselves. Billy and Camila's house is a more elevated and interesting version of that era, but F. INTERIOR BILLY & CAMILA'S HOUSE LOCATION, SET PHOTO. G. INTERIOR TEDDY'S HOUSE LOCATION, SET PHOTO. H.
